Sweet little Amandi has been diagnosed with Ventricular Septal Defect, or a hole in the chambers of her heart. This life-threatening condition causes Amandi to become weak, tire easily and suffer shortness of breath. She is in urgent need of corrective surgery. Without it, this child may not survive much longer and her parents live with fear of losing and her. While doctors in her home country have attempted to repair her heart, surgery has been postponed repeatedly due to the lack of medical resources in the Dominican Republic. | IKF SUCCESS STORY |
| Name: Christelle Auguste |
| Age: 6 years old |
| Country: Haiti |
| Diagnosis: Tetralogy of Fallot (a hole in the heart) |
|
|
Christelle began having seizure-like episodes just three days after she was born. After many emergency visits to the public hospital in Port-Au-Prince, Christelle’s parents were told the corrective surgery she needed to live was not available in Haiti. Doctors urged her parents to come to the US. Christelle arrived at IKF diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot (a hole in the heart) and other life-threatening heart malformations. Thanks to your generous donations, Christelle received life-saving heart-surgery at Holtz Children’s Hospital. She’s doing well now, and was even granted a wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation-a trip to Disney World before returning home to Haiti. Her family is thankful to all of you for giving their little girl a chance to live. |

NEW OFFICIAL FOR IKF
Jorge Roman Morey, Consul General for Peru in Miami |
Our first Official for Kids, Jorge Roman Morey, Consul General for Peru in Miami is a man with a brilliant diplomatic career. He has excelled in numerous positions in his native country, as well as being an excellent representative for Peru in the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, San Francisco and now Miami. Jorge Roman Morey has also been the recipient of multiple service awards and commendations from Colombia, Bolivia, Argentina and Spain.
When he was informed about two Peruvian girls in need of support (Guadalupe Torres and Noelia Carcamo), he stepped forward to do his part. He contacted his friends on the children’s behalf and displayed their flyers at the consulate offices. This created an awareness that translated into donations and airline tickets for these families. This is the response of one proud official that merits plagiarism.
We are proud to have him as our first Official for Kids, a category reserved for consul generals, ambassadors and other representatives from international government and organizations who participate in key initiatives and generate awareness of IKF.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT:
Anonymous Good Samaritan |
Last month, a “silent” donor helped give the gift of hearing and speech to six-year old Noelia Carcamo of Peru. When news of her congenital deafness and desperate need for a Cochlear implant was broadcasted on TV, many in this community generously sent us contributions to her fund. The most remarkable response came from a Good Samaritan who wishes to remain anonymous. Pledging to donate the difference between the amount of money needed for Noelia’s surgery and the amount donated from the community, this kind person presented IKF with a check for $30,000 for the implant. He then added another $1,000 for Noelia’s personal needs beyond the surgery.
Profoundly touched by this demonstration of caring, the Carcamos, who are Roman Catholics, selected their Good Samaritan to become Noelia’s godfather during her recent baptism at St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church. Noelia’s corrective implant was successful; however she will have to return to the US for follow-up and therapy. The generosity of our anonymous donor speaks very loudly as to the goodness and caring of our South Florida community |

| IKF NAMED CHARITY OF CHOICE FOR ARTEAMERICAS 2005 |
Now in its third year, Merrill Lynch Arteaméricas is fast becoming one of the world’s premier showcases for Latin art. This year’s event, held at the Coconut Grove Convention Center from April 7-11, featured works by more than 200 renowned masters, contemporary and emerging Latin artists.
Arteaméricas is internationally known and this year attracted top galleries from Spain, France and 18 countries in Latin America. As Charity of Choice, IKF was in the perfect position to meet and talk with gallery owners, collectors and artists, building a groundswell of interest for IKF’s upcoming inaugural signature event. The IKF Latin American Art Auction is scheduled for September 22, 2005. (More information in future newsletters, but save the date!)
In appreciation of this valued relationship with Arteaméricas and of their continued help in advancing IKF’s mission, special plaques were presented to title sponsor Merrill Lynch and to Leslie Pantín and Emilio Calleja, Arteaméricas coordinators. |
